Measured by reach, not return

The ventures here are a deliberate mix of nonprofits, civic technology companies and ordinary businesses built around a group the market underserves. What they have in common is the scoreboard.

Technology at the frontline

The most striking recent profile is HelpFirst, which applies large language models to safeguarding and to supporting caseworkers who were drowning in the volume of it. It is a use of AI aimed squarely at capacity in underfunded services.

CERA works at the other extreme of urgency, connecting police and medical responders directly with teachers during an active threat. RightHear came out of the founder's own lifelong difficulty with orientation and now makes public spaces navigable for blind and visually impaired people.

Government data, from both sides

Two companies here work on the same problem from opposite directions. UrbanLogiq sells into government, breaking down internal data silos so decisions can be made from evidence. Hozzl stands outside it, assembling official federal sources into a public timeline of what the government actually did.

Giving has a trust problem

The donation startups here all start from the same suspicion - that donors cannot tell where money goes. OWL verifies charities through onboarding before they can receive anything. Pactman builds a feedback loop between nonprofits and donors instead, and Dayra skips money altogether, distributing technology toys to children through food banks.

Closing the gap on purpose

A distinct cluster is explicit about which gap it is closing. The Journey Venture Studio builds healthcare companies with diverse founders rather than waiting to fund them. The New Collar Network creates careers through affordable certifications in Industry 4.0, and Dillon Consulting Services has been helping veterans start businesses since 2006.

Development work that leaves something behind

WHOlives is the neatest example of a model worth noting: rather than drilling wells itself, it trains and finances local entrepreneurs to run drilling businesses using its Village Drill. The well is the output; the business is the point.
