What counts as Legal Tech

Legal tech covers companies taking work off lawyers rather than adding to it, from litigation strategy to the document review nobody wants. On this hub that means AI applied to trial preparation and settlement, self-service legal documents and business formation, estate planning, e-signature, and the law firms profiled as businesses in their own right.

Removing steps, not giving advice

Very little on this hub tries to replace a lawyer's judgment. Almost all of it removes a step before the judgment - the paperwork, the filing, the preparation or the negotiation.

Where AI actually landed

NexLaw is the most ambitious company here, applying AI across the litigation process as a trial copilot for strategy and preparation. It is aimed at the part of legal work that is genuinely labour-intensive rather than at the part that carries liability.

Cybersettle solved a narrower problem much earlier, digitising financial negotiation and settlement so two parties can converge without the process itself consuming the money in dispute.

Estate planning, twice

Two companies here work on wills, and the difference between them is the interesting part. Willio makes creating a Last Will and Testament online straightforward. Gentreo takes its name for the argument - its whole position is that a document created once and filed away is not planning, and that the service has to continue across a life.

Documents as a self-service product

DocPro and FormsPal both make legal documents available without an appointment, one as a platform and one as a free database with a builder on top. CorpNet.com does the same for company formation and state tax registration, and grew 200 percent during the pandemic doing it. CocoSign closes the loop by handling the signature itself.

The gap at the bottom

The profile worth reading last is Legal-Eagles, which exists for people caught in a specific trap - too well off to qualify for free legal services, not well off enough to hire anyone. It is the clearest statement on this hub of what legal technology is actually for.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Legal Tech hub cover?

Software and services that remove legal work - AI for litigation and settlement, self-service documents, estate planning, business formation and e-signature - alongside a few law firms profiled as businesses rather than as technology.

How is AI being used in law here?

Mostly in preparation rather than in advice. NexLaw builds a Legal AI Trial Copilot covering strategy and trial preparation across the litigation process, which is the most substantial AI application on the hub.

Why is estate planning so well represented?

Because it is the legal product most people need and fewest people buy. Willio lets someone create a will online, and Gentreo argues explicitly that a one-off document is not enough - its pitch is ongoing support rather than a single transaction.

Is anyone working on access to justice?

Legal-Eagles is the clearest example, aimed at low-income and incarcerated people who do not qualify for free legal services but cannot afford representation. Immigration Court Mentor works the other side of the same gap, improving the advocacy of the attorneys who serve it.

Do you cover law firms as well as software?

Occasionally, where the firm is doing something structurally different. Demesmin and Dover is profiled for rethinking how a personal injury practice works, and RC and Co for building around specialised practice areas.
