What SoundCommerce does
SoundCommerce helps organizations make data actionable and trustworthy. Its flagship data platform, Reactor, is an intelligent data pipeline that collects, defines and models data from a company’s systems and applications. Reactor provides clean, well-defined data that enables true democratization of AI and data analytics.
The Current Landscape
Companies are rushing to build AI into every process to usher in data-driven decision making, but many are missing the foundational step of defining and labelling their data in a way that makes it truly actionable and dependable. For all the hype around large language models (LLMs), most are riddled with outdated, inaccurate information and prone to hallucinations. As companies start to better understand AI and where it’s most useful to their business, they are increasingly demanding tools that allow them to train AI on smaller, proprietary data sets that they have more control over. Tools like SoundCommerce’s Reactor help them define that data before it’s hosted in data warehouses like Snowflake and Google Cloud BigQuery, making the data ready for analytics, generative AI and broad use by business users, while reducing data warehousing, storage and compute costs.
Company Birth Story
SoundCommerce was founded in 2018 by several Amazon veterans to help direct-to-consumer brands better unite operations and marketing data for better decision-making. The software initially integrated with and pulled data from all major commerce systems, like Shopify and Salesforce Commerce Cloud, allowing retailers to start with granular transaction and event data to render more accurate and holistic customer data models than they could achieve with generic customer data platforms (CDPs).
In 2024, SoundCommerce launched Reactor, its intelligent data pipeline that helps companies across every industry collect, define and model data. Reactor was designed to help companies improve data collection and quality to build better, more trusted AI and analytics models in the cloud.
SoundCommerce is available as a native Google Cloud Platform Marketplace offering and as a turnkey Snowflake solution.
The Solution
SoundCommerce’s Reactor combines three critical data functions that previously required manual data engineering work, or separate vendor solutions with high cost and complexity. These are, (1) data ETL or onboarding, (2) permanent event logging to help future-proof data flows and models, and (3) a metadata catalog to capture data understanding and facilitate data governance. With Reactor, all of these functions are provided together in one easy place.
Every business wants to make data-driven decisions, but when your data is siloed and disconnected, it’s impossible to do so with confidence. SoundCommerce’s vision is to help companies unite all of their data across disparate systems, platforms and tools so that it’s truly actionable and ready for AI and analytics.
For example, if you need to determine if a customer is profitable, you need a holistic view of how much it cost to acquire that customer, how much the customer spent, whether they returned products, and how much it cost to ship products to them. Most of this data, however, is located in different systems.
SoundCommerce understands that every company is unique, and that to truly understand metrics like customer lifetime value and order profitability, a granular view of every transaction and data point is paramount. The company focuses on foundational work, like defining and labelling data during the early stages of ingestion, to ensure that data can be trusted and used by everyone across the organization.
A Customer Story
PacSun, a leading specialty retailer based in California, uses SoundCommerce to unite disparate data from its marketing and operations functions. Having all this data together in one place enables the retailer to make better decisions, improve the customer experience, and grow customer lifetime profits.
“SoundCommerce provides near real-time centralized customer insights which can help PacSun marketing and operations create better customer experience. SoundCommerce has been key to PacSun unlocking value from our data,” said Shirley Gao, CIO at PacSun.
PacSun can now align customer profiles and segments with post- shopping considerations, like cancellations, returns, order and variable costs of delivery – variables ignored by traditional CDPs. With SoundCommerce, they can enrich shopper profiles, track shopper behavior and value across omnichannel operations, optimize engagement and retention programs for profitability, and more.
This has enabled PacSun to drive an 11% increase in customer lifetime value and a 9.5% reduction in customer acquisition costs year over year.
The Team Culture
SoundCommerce is led by a leadership team that includes co- founder and CEO Eric Best, Chief Commercial Officer Emma Cope, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Jared Stiff, VP of Partnerships, Carly Zhang, Head of Product, David Hill, and VP of Data Strategy, Rachel Workman.
SoundCommerce’s culture embraces lifelong learning and intellectual curiosity. The company values data-driven decision- making, taking calculated risks, delivering high-quality work on-time, and competing and winning as a team.
A founder quote
“Measuring thorny but foundational metrics key to business success becomes easier as AI tooling allows non-engineers to query complex data – and low-code data pipelines make it easier to onboard that trustworthy data,” said Eric Best, CEO of SoundCommerce. “In order to trust AI outputs, businesses need to be able to know and control how data is being collected and transformed, and they need that data to be observable and auditable for every use case.”
