What is 9am.health?
9am.health is a virtual diabetes clinic providing affordable medications, labs, and personalized, compassionate medical care for people living with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Founded in 2021 by the management team behind mySugr, 9am.health is available directly to consumers through a low-cost monthly subscription that connects people with a care team of licensed providers, pharmacists, diabetes care specialists, and nutritionists. Headquartered in San Diego, 9am.health is backed by 7Wire Ventures, Human Capital, Founders Fund, Define Ventures, Speedinvest, iSeed Ventures, and StartUp Health.
The Current Landscape
9am.health exists to serve an underinsured and uninsured customer base. Nearly 1 in 3 Americans are living with prediabetes or diabetes, and conditions related to diabetes - 1 in 2 live with hypertension, and 1 in 3 live with hyperlipidemia. Further, 51% of the US workforce have high deductible plans, while 9% don’t have access to health insurance.
Company Birth Story
The team behind 9am.health met while working together at the company’s predecessor, mySugr in the U.S., which sold to Roche for $100M in 2017 as reported by Techcrunch. Two of 9am.health’s co-founders Frank Westermann and Anton Kittelberger are both afflicted with Type 1 diabetes, the two both met and bonded over their individual challenges with the disease and launched mySugr. 9am.health is the second joint venture dedicated to diabetes care for both Westermann and Kittelberger.
“Answers for health questions shouldn’t be collected and forgotten between appointments, medications shouldn’t be another errand, and prescriptions shouldn’t be interrupted because of a busy schedule. We take on more of this burden, so our patients can lean back and have their medications, supplies, lab tests, and health team brought to them”, said Frank Westermann, Co-Founder and co-CEO of 9am.health."
For many of 9am.health’s executive board and medical health experts on staff, the mission is personal – most of the team have either experienced their own share of challenges in receiving adequate access to care in the current healthcare system and are currently managing their own diabetes diagnosis as well.
The Solution
In April 2022, 9am.health announced a $16M Series A round of funding and have since expanded to 47 states including Washington D.C. Further, the company plans to expand to all 50 U.S. States and is actively seeking ways to expand their reach to customers beyond the single pay option for their subscription-based offerings to be covered through employer health insurance.
