What Outbound does
Outbound is a shared EV provider which installs ‘on demand’ electric vehicles in residential and commercial buildings for the use of those who live and work there.
Facilitated by the dedicated Outbound app, users are able to book and open the EV’s using their phone - much like Uber, but the user does the driving.
It’s all aimed at reducing people’s dependency on their own cars, and long term, eliminating the need to own one altogether.
The Current Landscape
There’s a great mindset shift underway when it comes to travel and movement. People are working from home more, and commuting less; but they still need to get around, from time to time.
That’s where owning a car that's parked on average 96% of the time, seems like an unnecessary expense - particularly in a cost of living crisis.
Enter Outbound, providing relatively cheap transportation in luxury electric vehicles.
There’s multiple operators in the market, headlined by Uber, but they’re all working to slightly different models.
Company Birth Story
Founder and CEO Luke Rust is an expat Brit who moved to Australia with his Australian wife and family during COVID.
He instantly saw that car ownership was a national obsession here, and thought to pioneer the ‘shared mobility’ concept in Australia, which he’d seen work very successfully in Europe.
He teamed up with development figure, Martin Leuenberger, and lawyer, Clayton Glenister, and Outbound was born.
Fast forward three years, and the company has seven locations nationwide so far, and 13 Teslas on the road.
The Solution
Outbound is all about convenience - the car you want, when you want it.
Cost is an increasing incentive in today’s cost of living crisis though - the average private vehicle in Australia now costs up to $25,000 per year, and represents 17% of household incomes.
Without Outbound, that expense, depending on usage, could be reduced to just a few thousand (with no depreciation on the car itself for users).
A founder quote
“Privately owned cars really are the definition of a money hole but ‘shared mobility’ as a concept can save people thousands on their household budgets.
“Driving to work and paying exorbitant fuel and parking costs is such an outdated way to get around.
“Outbound, as an ‘on demand’ service means people have more options for travel during the day and can leave their own cars at home.
“If they do need to go somewhere, they can simply hop in a shared EV.
“The uptake has been great - users love driving a luxury electric vehicle and the convenience of having it based at their home or workplace.
“I think there’s about to be a real mindset change with transportation.”
