What Vanguard Voices Does

Vanguard Voices is a social impact movement that lifts the voices of employees across the globe to speak up for psychological safety in their workplaces. Vanguard Voices is bringing leaders, academics, advocates, and activists onto a common platform to amplify the awareness and multiply the impact for safer workplaces—together.

The Current Landscape


Too many people are unable to speak out at work - whether it’s the lack of confidence in themselves or in the organizations they work for. Many have accepted corporate politics as the status quo. In turn, corporate workplaces have become toxic environments. Individuals suffer unjustifiable detrimental effects which ripple out into society.


According to Gallup’s 2023 State of the Workplace Report, only 23% are engaged at work and more than 6 out of 10 employees are ‘’quiet quitting’’ or actively disengaged from work - thus costing the global economy $8.8 trillion dollars, or 9% of global GDP.


Research also states that psychological safety at work is the foundation for success in any company. Psychological safety impacts many areas of the organizational and employee experience: Workplace culture and values; Mental health and emotional well-being; Diversity, equity, and inclusion; Employee empowerment.


Ultimately society can tackle all these topics more effectively when it is approached through the lens of psychological safety first.


There are many coaching and consultancy services offered,but individually no one person has the power to fix a broken system. A global outcry is required to bring the topic of psychological safety to the top of workplace agendas worldwide.


Company Birth Story

In 2018, Jessica Bensch championed a grassroots movement in a large pharmaceutical company and within 3 years drew more than 25,000 engagements from over 100 locations worldwide. By challenging the status quo and providing recommendations for change, these efforts resulted in psychological safety becoming a core topic for teams across the company.


Recognizing that psychological safety at work extends beyond the walls of any one company and that it is a human topic, Vanguard Voices was founded in December, 2022.


The Solution


The mission of Vanguard Voices is to bring psychological safety to the top of workplace agendas through shared voice and bold action.


The pact between organizations and employees needs to be rewritten. Organizations need a framework to ensure accountability and transparency; And employees need to break the unwritten code of silence by speaking out. The system only changes when everyone agrees to change.


Addressing the epidemic of psychological unsafe environments cannot be whittled down into a three-step process. It requires deliberate, intentional focus and action.This is a top-down, bottom-up, and side-to-side approach - starting from top-level leaders to front-line employees and it requires holistic solutions.
